When the pandemic first started, American Duchess (an incredible historically-inspired footwear company that also creates beautiful 18th-century patterns) put up this cape pattern for free for seamsters to create at home. I loved the style of the cape right away because it is so versatile! It looks right at home in a bunch of different era's, and I thought that in a bright red it would look a bit like a 1940s nursing cape. I happened to have this beautiful red fleece that is suitable for a jacket and I had not been sure what to make with it for a few years by that point. I decided to draft the pattern following the instructions given and cut out the red fleece and a houndstooth flannel for a lining and I made most of the cape well over a year ago while I was taking my university courses from home. A few days ago I finally brought it back out and finished it! It is so warm and soft, and it suits all of my 1930s and 1940s styled clothes.
When I first finished the cape I felt a little silly wearing it, especially at this time of year. I was worried that I looked like I was dressed up for Halloween - especially with the red colour. However, it is so cozy and I love the look of it, so I think that I will enjoy wearing it anyway.
The cape is made up of 4 different shapes - the collar (which shows off some of the contrasting lining), the center back piece, 2 shoulder pieces that give the cape more shapre rather than being a full circle like some are, and 2 center front wrap pieces that have darts so they fit around the chest smoothly. You can either have it tie at the back or have a button/snap/hook and eye closure. I chose to put a hook and eye closure so it is easy to put on and take off. I also made sure that it is loose enough that I can use it as an extra layer over a coat. Since I live in a place that can get very cold in the winter, I think it will be a well used layering piece.
I am so thrilled that I finally finished off this piece and can wear it! It is so soft and comfortable, so I hope that I can get a lot of use out of it during the fall and winter.
