I finished this skirt almost a month ago, but we finally got around to getting photos of it - and just in time too! Not even 24 hours after this we got 20 cm of snow, so I am glad that we were able to capture the beautiful autumn that we have had.
This skirt is inspired by my favourite show Endeavour. It is a murder mystery set in Oxford in the 1960s, with a young, brilliant detective named Endeavour Morse as the main character. I love the juxtaposition of the trendy clothes of the 1960s with the classic architecture or Oxford, and the show always fits perfectly into the 'dark academia' aesthetic that has been popular lately. I love the academic look, and I have been interested in creating something inspired by the show since I started watching it, almost 7 years ago now. The character that I based this skirt off of is a journalist named Dorothea Frasil, and she often wears skirts that follow the trends while still be classic and elegant. I love the slightly a-line, just above the knee skirts that she wears in the show.
It is pretty simple to pattern a skirt of this shape if you already have a sloper (a basic skirt pattern based off of your measurements to alter into other patterns). I created a sloper as a part of the fashion program that I took part in before I started my history degree. I altered the sloper to have no darts and an invisible waistband, and to go to right above the knee. I already had this amazing houndstooth wool from a pencil skirt that I made last year, so it ended up being a very quick project! I love that this skirt is long enough that I can wear it to work and to meetings, but it has that 1960s style still.
Thanks for reading!
