1960's Coat Revamp

funkkatherine

More than a year ago I made a 1960's inspired set of a dress and spring coat. I always really enjoyed the set, however the coat was a bit wonky due to some construction errors. I finally got around to altering it this summer, and I am so pleased with it.

This coat was originally fully lined, however it was very cheap lining that ended up shrinking when I ironed it. That meant that when I sewed it in, it was slightly too small for the shell and made the coat puff out in strange ways.

Since I didn't have any lining in my stash this summer, I ended up just taking out the lining completely and finished the inside so that it is more of a summer coat. I also added a huge covered button that I had in my button jar, and I love how it looks.

This coat was inspired by some of my favourite styles of the 1960's. While I can't help but love the fun, bright fashion in the later part of the era, the more classic designs will always have my heart.

The design of this coat is really lovely because it is the more trendy length while including some lovely details. It includes a raglan sleeve with a simple collar and an a-line shape. This pattern is a vintage Simplicity one that included both the jacket and the dress that I made to go with it (you can see photos of that here).

All of the alterations that I made to this coat were done by hand (while watching BBC shows, of course), and I am so pleased with how the inside looks. I almost like it better than the outside!

Have you ever made a small alteration that made a world of difference to the garment?
